Q: Why did we establish a new policy around paperwork and registration?

Our all volunteer leaders and coaches can no longer take on the task of reminding families to get their tasks done.  You will be notified well in advance of the need to have paperwork completed and you must do it without adding a tremendous workload to those trying to run the team.

Q: What is the best way to contact Western Wings Leadership members or Head Coaches?

Use the form on our Contact Us page.

Q: What is the website for Minnesota Special Olympics?

The State Special Olympics website is www.somn.org

Q: If athletes want to practice with the team but aren’t ready for competition, is it OK to sign up for a sport?

Yes, we have a number of athletes who greatly benefit from exercise and the structure that practice provides.

Q: What is an “Area” Competition?

The Western Wings team is part of Special Olympics MN, Area 11 that includes Anoka, Carver and Hennepin Counties.  During the mid season Area competition, we compete with other teams within our Area 11.

Q: How many Areas are there within the State?

There are 12 areas and during State Games, many teams travel from out of town and spend the weekend attending State Games and activities.

Q: Can we skip Area Games and just compete at State?

No, an athlete must compete at Area to be eligible at State.  Some exceptions are made for sudden illness or weather cancellations.

Q: My athlete didn’t finish his race in first place, but received a blue ribbon or a gold medal.  What happened?

For competition, athletes are placed in a small group or division based on age, sex and submitted times.  There might be more than one division within a race so athletes are competing with only a few athletes listed in their division.

Q: Can athletes be on two different teams at the same time?

Yes, but you must be on the official roster of both teams.

Q: How often must athlete’s renew their medical forms?

Every 3 years.

Q: Can athletes practice even though their medical for has expired?

No.  Forms must be up to date.
