Western Wing’s alpine ski racing and snowboard racing team is called “The Black Diamonds”.   We practice at Hyland Hills on Sunday mornings and enjoy up to 2 hours of  racing practice on the North Hill.   Our athletes are guided and supported by  adult coaches who might be family members or friends of the team.  We partner with “The Blues” Special Olympics Ski Team in order to share expenses for racing equipment and the work of setting up our race courses.

New venue for competition: Wild Mountain in Taylors Falls, MN is the 2023 site for Area Timing Races (the Qualifier) on February 5th and State Competition February 25, 2023  All racers will qualify for State Racing but must attend the qualifying race. Competition races are set at novice, intermediate and advanced levels.

Requirements for acceptance to the team include the ability to turn and stop on skis, get on and off the chair-lift independently or with minimal supervision.  We are not a learn-to-ski program but welcome intermediate skiers and boarders who are generally safe on the hill and independent on skis.  Athletes who are not independent may join the team but will have to bring a 1:1 certified coach with them to be their assistant on the hill.  See the coaching tab on this website for certification information.

Fees: Weekly Hyland fees for 2022-23 will be $23 for tickets and $20 for rental if needed.  Coaches ski/board for free. Helmets are required.  Contact soblackdiamonds@gmail.com for a helmet, if needed.  We may have extras.

Skiers and Boarders—welcome to The Black Diamonds!

Head coaches are Ginger Guggenberger, Sharon D’Arco, Mark Holliday and Ali Sauer.
